Research Consulting

Sometimes you don't need an answer. You need to know what the real problem is.

Research rarely gets stuck neatly. A problem with methodology may begin with the research question. A data problem may originate in sampling. A writing problem may reveal a weakness in the argument. Research Consulting gives you a place to bring the whole problem.

Research Is a System

Research problems are connected.

A research project is a chain of decisions. Your question influences the design. The design influences what evidence you collect. The evidence determines which analyses are possible, and those analyses determine what conclusions you can reasonably defend.

That is why fixing the most visible problem is not always enough. Sometimes we need to trace the problem backwards before deciding what should happen next.

Start With Your Situation

Where are you stuck?

You do not need to know which research service you need before contacting us. Start by describing what is happening.

01

“I have an idea, but I don't know how to turn it into research.”

02

“My research has started, but something isn't working.”

03

“I'm not sure whether my methodology is appropriate.”

04

“I have data, but I don't know what analysis makes sense.”

05

“My supervisor or reviewer has raised a problem I don't know how to resolve.”

06

“My thesis or paper doesn't seem to come together.”

07

“My project crosses disciplines and I'm unsure how the pieces fit together.”

08

“I know something is wrong, but I can't identify what.”

How Consulting Works

Diagnose before prescribing.

The objective is not to give you a generic solution. It is to understand the research well enough to identify the decision that actually needs to be made.

01

Understand

You explain the research, its context, what you have done so far and where the difficulty appears to be.

02

Diagnose

We examine the relationships between the problem and the research decisions surrounding it.

03

Advise

We identify realistic options, explain their implications and help you understand the trade-offs involved.

04

Move Forward

You leave with a clearer decision, next step or plan for moving the research forward.

The Research System

One research project. Many connected decisions.

Research Consulting looks across the project rather than assuming that every difficulty belongs neatly to one category.

What can we think through together?

The consultation can focus narrowly on one decision or examine several connected parts of the research.

Independent Research

Consulting doesn't mean taking over your research.

Good consulting helps you make better-informed research decisions. It should increase your understanding of the project—not transfer intellectual responsibility for it to somebody else.

Our role Help identify the underlying problem
Your role Make the final research decisions
Our role Explain alternatives and implications
Your role Understand and defend those choices
Our role Challenge assumptions when necessary
Your role Retain intellectual ownership
Our role Help create a realistic way forward
Your role Carry the research forward responsibly

Questions

Before we begin.

You do not need to prepare a formal consulting brief. A clear description of your research and the difficulty is enough to begin the conversation.

What if I don't know what kind of research help I need?

That is precisely where Research Consulting can be useful. You can describe the project, what has happened so far and where things have become unclear. The first task is to identify the underlying issue rather than assume what the solution should be.

Can I consult SRS before starting my research?

Yes. Early consultation can help clarify the research problem, questions, feasibility, methodological options and potential weaknesses before major decisions become difficult to change.

Can you review research that is already underway?

Yes. Existing projects can be examined at different stages. The purpose is to understand the decisions already made, identify the current difficulty and determine what realistic options remain.

Can you help with supervisor or reviewer feedback?

Yes. We can help you interpret the underlying research issue raised by feedback and think through appropriate responses or revisions.

Is consulting only for PhD researchers?

No. Research Consulting may be useful for postgraduate students, doctoral researchers, faculty, independent researchers, professionals and organisations working on research projects.

Will SRS make the research decisions for me?

No. We can analyse the problem, explain alternatives, question assumptions and discuss implications. Final intellectual and methodological responsibility remains with the researcher.

You Don't Need to Diagnose It First

Bring us the problem.

Tell us what you're working on, what has happened so far and where things stopped making sense. We can begin from there.
